Can Gynecomastia Return After Surgery? Let’s Clear the Air!
Hello again, folks! It’s Dr. Vishal Purohit, your local MCh Plastic Surgeon in Jaipur. Today, we’re going to answer a question that I often get asked – Can gynecomastia return after surgery?
Firstly, let’s start by saying – don’t worry! it’s impossible for gynecomastia to return after surgery provided the procedure is performed correctly. So let’s dive in and discuss some of the factors that could contribute to its recurrence.
The type of surgery performed
- Liposuction only: The gynecomastia glands are surrounded by fat. As a person gains body fat the glands appear bigger and when they lose body fat the glands appear smaller. This leads to a common misconception that fat removal via Liposuction alone will remedy the problem. All forms of Liposuction whether traditional or energy device mediated will provide some relief initially but gradually fat will accumulate. Also, the glands are actually left behind after liposuction which may develop further over time due to various other reasons. The common reasons why Gynecomastia may come back after surgery are given below.
- Liposuction with Gland excision: This procedure includes surgical gland removal after liposuction. The glands are completely removed from the body. This is the gold standard procedure that gets rid of gynecomastia forever.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE RECURRENCE OF GYNECOMASTIA
1. Hormonal Imbalance
The most common cause of gynecomastia is a hormonal imbalance, particularly an excess of estrogen or a deficiency of testosterone. If this hormonal imbalance persists or recurs after surgery, there is a chance that gynecomastia could return. It’s crucial, therefore, to work with your healthcare provider to manage and monitor any hormonal issues.
2. Weight Gain
Gynecomastia is essentially the enlargement of the glandular tissue in the male breast. However, excess fat can also lead to a similar appearance, a condition called pseudogynecomastia. If you gain weight after surgery, you might see an increase in the size of your breasts due to fat accumulation.
3. Use of Certain Medications
Certain medications can cause gynecomastia. These include some drugs used to treat ulcers, heart disease, anxiety, and prostate cancer, among others. If you start or continue to use such medications after surgery, gynecomastia could potentially recur. Always let your healthcare provider know about all the medications you’re taking.
4. Use of Steroids or Drugs
Steroids, particularly anabolic steroids often used for bodybuilding, can lead to gynecomastia. Similarly, drugs like marijuana and heroin, and even alcohol, can disrupt your hormone balance and potentially cause gynecomastia. If you continue to use these substances after surgery, the risk of recurrence increases.
5. Aging
As men age, they naturally produce less testosterone. This hormonal change can lead to gynecomastia even in older men. While this is not a direct result of surgery, it’s something to be aware of.
To conclude, while there is a possibility of gynecomastia returning after surgery, taking the right steps can minimize the risk. It involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing any existing hormonal imbalances, and avoiding certain medications and substances known to disrupt hormone levels. As always, keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider.
